Group Therapy
Group therapy, which was originally structured as a solution to the generally high cost of individual therapy, has a 50-year old past. And gradually, it was established that the benefits of group therapy were different from individual therapy, it was accepted as a widely exercised method. It is a model where a group of people come together on a specific theme and is usually applied by one or two therapists examples of common themes may be identified as; personal development, fear of flying, alcohol and substance addiction, bereavement, sexual abuse, panic problems, social anxiety and bashfulness. The therapist ensures that all the clients get the support of the other members of the group. This therapy is carried out in small groups. The topics are comprised of the predicament the clients are in, at present and what they have experienced in the past, what they have witnessed, and what they were affected by, all of which are discussed under the guidance of the therapist.
In this mode of therapy sharing is essential. Participants support one another within the framework of their mutual problems, come up with and develop solutions together and put them into practice. Group therapy enables the clients to examine their problems and the difficulties they encounter and the anxieties they have in their personal lives in a social environment and get immediate feedback. All the participants who have joined the group benefit from the group therapy by sharing their problems in a safe and confidential environment and by empathizing with others and trying to help them with their difficulties and thereby acquire a new perspective on their own problems.
Group therapy envisages a small group of clients coming together under the supervision (observation) of a professional therapist and helping themselves as well as others. Group therapy is especially helpful in matters such as loneliness, depression and anxiety. When you take the first step to get therapy, your therapist and yourself will examine together the reasons for your problem. And thereby you will start on the path of understanding your problem better and you yourself will generate the choices to change the situation and overcome the problem.
In group meetings, participants are encouraged to speak freely and without restraint, to one another. When necessary the professional therapist will guide the conversation. Sometimes, group therapy is practiced alongside individual therapy. In such cases it is assumed that through this combination, the client gains a variety of assets. With the aid of group therapy, you realize that you are not alone and that you can share your problems with people who have similar problems to yours and feel that you are with people who understand you.
Group therapy is especially effective on interpersonal relations, depression, anxiety, serious illnesses, and loss of a dear one, addictions and behavioral disorders. Usually, the group is made up of people who have the ability to learn different things from one another. It is normal to feel embarrassed and reserved when one joins a group for the first time. But in time, a safe environment is created.
