Couples and Marriage Therapy

Couples and Marriage Therapy

This is a therapy model, which aims at solving the problems couples, married or unmarried, face. In this therapy, conversations take place between the couples guided by the therapist. Though usually couples participate in the session together, sometimes couples and marriage therapy may be given to one person alone, based on the relationship. The aim in this therapy is to enable the couples to understand each other better. Therefore, the reactions the couples give to each other are discussed. Based on the hypothesis that some portion of the problems that arise between couples is the tendency to blame the partner and overlook one’s own shortcomings, the therapist assumes the task of presenting every aspect of the situations in a clear and impartial way. The main objective in this model is to jointly develop solutions for the mutually agreed on targets. Being a couple means bringing together very many differences including their philosophy of life, their individual characters, their perspective of the outer world. The couples’ attitudes towards these differences may be a determining factor in the course of the relationship and therefore, in a problematic relationship the nature of approaching the differences should be evaluated. Such situations as difficulties faced in sexual rapport, mutual trust issues, infidelity and separation are some of the examples. In addition, a multitude of anxieties and misjudgments about relationships including examining the compatibility of the couples, or the belief that marriage will solve the problems couples are dealing with are analyzed in couples and marriage therapy.

Families usually seek therapy as a result of a conflict, or tensions caused by disputes. Issues such as conflicts or lack of communication, failure to meet the responsibilities toward one another and jealousy are some of the topics taken up in couples therapy. As couples’ problems usually reflect on each other, these problems should be dealt with together within the structure of the relationship.
